I am thrilled to be joining composer/keyboardist Dave Bryant, my musical partner of many decades, for a Third Thursdays concert on Thursday, September 18, 2024, at 8:00 PM at Harvard-Epworth Church near Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA.
Performing with us will be slide electric guitarist David Tronzo (David Sanborn, John Cale, The Lounge Lizards, Sex Mob, Wayne Horvitz), drummer James Kamal Jones (Roberta Flack, Yusef Lateef, Shirley Caesar, Leo Smith, Lonnie Smith, Afrika Bambaataa), and Brazilian percussionist Thiago Trad (Paul Winter, Orkestra Rumpilezz, Graham Haynes). This will be Thiago’s first appearance in Boston.
This is around the fourth time that I have joined Dave for a Third Thursdays concert. Third Thursdays is a monthly harmolodic* jazz series project featuring keyboardist and composer Dave Bryant. Each month, Dave is joined by several of his many long-time collaborators hailing from the Boston area and beyond. Many of Dave’s associates and bandmates from Ornette Coleman’s band Prime Time have performed in the series. The Coleman alumni are featured in YouTube interviews with Dave, as part of an oral history of musicians whose music was shaped by tenures in Coleman’s band. I can’t think of another music series focused on regularly convening Coleman associates. After two years running, these concerts have been a great way to listen to music, connect with like-minded musicians, and check out luminaries like Jamaaladeen Tacuma and James Blood Ulmer, who rarely come to the city.
*Harmolodic is a term used by pioneering saxophonist/composer Ornette Coleman to describe his aesthetic approach to music.
The project is supported by the Appalachian Springs Foundation.
